Graphic Design Fundamentals

This collection contains projects completed throughout a variety of courses at Michigan State University intended to teach the fundamentals of Graphic Design. Projects involve graphic form, typography, UI/UX design, and motion design.

Cube

This project began with 10 front and back sketches of cubes, making use of curve, shape, and line. 3 of these cubes were then chosen to be constructed in the from of 3x3’’ paper cubes. One of these cubes was chosen to be constructed digitally, and was continuously refined until the final version was complete. The goal of this project was to utilize 6 surfaces simultaneously, integrating multiple planes harmoniously, to consider the characteristics of the cube, and how to interact with it, to logically dissect the relationships created and controlled from side to side, and to work asymmetrically, striving for contrast and harmony on each side and within the whole.

Fox Icon

This project began with 30 thumbnail sketches of a fox. 5 of these sketches were chosen, enlarged, and refined. 2 of these sketches were chosen to be digitally rendered. Finally, the final version of the Icon was selected and refined again. The goal of this project was to use all the individual elements of form (point, line, curve, color, shape and space) simultaneously for the purpose of visual communication, and to continue to create harmony of form through repetition, progression, and formal logic.

“Consume” Poster Series

For this project, each designer was assigned a word. This word was to be mind-mapped, brainstormed, etc., to create a multitude of different sketches. Each sketch aimed to define the word “Consume” in it’s own manner. 3 of these sketches were then revamped in different fashions (vector art, collage, and large sketch/digital editing). Of these three, one style was selected, and the other two were remade to suggest that the three posters were a part of the same “series.” This produced the final designs pictured above.

“Cycle” Wordmark
This project began with a word brainstorming process which provided inspiration for the 40 different wordmark sketches. 4 of these sketches were chosen and refined (Sharp, Parachute, Cheeta, and Cycle). Cycle was refined further, and digitally rendered.

Sketched “Flagged” Typeface & Ligature Board

This project began with with 10 sketches of the word “nod,” each in a different original serif font. After selecting a control group, the typeface in its entirety was sketched out, making use of uppercase, lowercase, and numerals. Once the kinks of this typeface were worked out, this typeface was then the inspiration for 20 ligature sketches. Finally, one of the ligatures was refined and rendered digitally.

“Redacted” Typeface

This project began by reshaping Baskerville typeface. The typeface was distorted with the goal of no longer resembling Baskerville whatsoever. The font then went through multiple revisions using ‘A’, ‘M’, and ‘S’ as “test” to determine rules and relationships for the typeface. These rules were then outlined, and the full uppercase typeface was constructed.

AAHD Alumni Collective 2023

The goal of this project was to create a cohesive spread (using Adobe InDesign) displaying questions and responses of an alumni interview, to be featured as a part of the yearly AAHD Alumni Collective. This project was reliant on the designers understanding of typography and layout choices.

Event Bingo

This Bingo application is designed for a ticket selling company (i.e. StubHub, SeatGeek, TicketMaster, etc.). There are an overwhelming number of sites in this market, so a Bingo feature which rewards the user would set a company apart from the competition. The idea is that, given a person’s location of residence, they are generated a Bingo board with different concert/stadium venues in the area. Once a line of the Bingo board is completed, the user is rewarded with a free ticket to a show/game in their immediate area. This would encourage ticket sales, and would grant users a reasonably priced reward.

School Sync

Students often feel as though their personal needs are not met when it comes to the American Education System. Students need a method in which to clarify these needs to their teachers in order to be provided with ample accommodations. In relation to this, teachers need a method to be held accountable to providing these students with necessary individual resources. Not having access to these resources can lead to a reduced quality of education.

School Sync is a confidential messaging platform to allow students to express individual concerns and needs to their teachers. These messages ping an advisor, so that the messaged teacher is held accountable in both responding to, and accommodating for the students needs appropriately. This allows students to communicate effectively with both teachers and advisors. School Sync includes a peer communication feature, which allows students to discuss assignments, exchange notes, etc.

Many students often require individual accommodations when it comes to an in-class setting. However, teachers sometimes fail to meet each student’s needs. To resolve this issue, students and teachers need a communication platform overseen by an advisory professional (allowing for accountability from all avenues).
